Got Babies? Be summer safe - Don't take a vacation from safety.
Summer is a great time for making lifelong family memories.

    GOT BABIES? BE SUMMER SAFE
Summer is a great time for making lifelong family memories. But keep in mind that ER doctors have dubbed summer trauma season due to the years highest rate of unintentional injury during these months. Heres what parents need to know:

DONT TAKE A VACATION FROM SAFETY
Tragedies peak in the summer because children are supervised less and have more time to play outdoors. Close supervision combined with babyproofing, protective gear and other simple preventions will help your child avoid danger.

    GREATEST SUMMER TIME RISKS
The main culprits of summer accidents are drownings, falls, bike and car crashes and pedestrian incidents. Take note of these marked risks and use extra caution this season when taking walks and while in the car. Use properly installed car seats and boosters for your kids.

    FALLS
Beach cities residents keep windows open during the summer months to catch ocean breezes but open windows (5 inches or more) and unsupervised children can have tragic consequences. Screens are not a safeguard against falling through windows as they can easily give way. Have window locks or window guards professionally installed. Childproof stairs and railings on decks with safety gates and Plexiglas barriers. Move cribs, chairs, beds and other furniture away from open windows.

    WATER HAZARDS
Water safety is a must at beaches, pools, lakes wherever there is water. Never leave a child alone near water, even for a moment. Lifeguards and floating devices are not to be trusted in lieu of parental supervision. When infants and toddlers are around water, always have the child within arms reach, providing touch supervision. A small child can drown in an unlocked toilet, two inches of bathwater, a bucket of water and even a pets water dish.

    BE VIGILANT
Babyproofing is a must for a safe environment but there is never a replacement for the watchful eyes of a parent.

So, soak up the joys of summer and remember to childproof your home before your baby starts crawling.
