SBMM Book Club
Mine’s Bigger
By David A. Kaplan
$: FREE to the Public
Join us on the 2nd Wednesday of each month for the SBMM Book Club. Take part in engaging discussions about a wide variety of maritime-related reads. Below is a summary of month’s selection.
As the dominant venture capitalist of Silicon Valley, Tom Perkins had seemingly done it all—from amassing a billion-dollar fortune to getting himself convicted of manslaughter in France. But his ultimate dream was to create the biggest, fastest, riskiest, highest-tech, most self-indulgent sailboat ever built.
With keen storytelling and biting wit, bestselling author David A. Kaplan takes us inside the mind of an American genius and behind the scenes of an extraordinary venture: the birth of Perkins\'s $130 million marvel The Maltese Falcon. This modern clipper ship is as long as a football field and forty-two feet wide, with three rotating masts, each twenty stories high, and a bridge straight out of Star Trek. The riveting biography of a remarkable ship and the remarkable man who built it, Mine\'s Bigger is an unforgettable profile of ambition, hubris, audacity, and the imagination of a legendary entrepreneur.

Back to School Tours
0000-00-00
As children enter school this fall, they will learn their ABC’s, but they also need to learn about good nutrition to live long, healthy lives.
Parents can help play an important role in their child’s nutritional health when packing school lunches. In order to help keep families involved in the process and help spark a nutritional interest among the children, the Ventura County Farmers’ Market Association invites parents and school aged kids to come to the Market, sample the items and talk to the many farmers who bring the food directly from the field to the table.
“One of our continuous goals is to educate families about good, wholesome nutrition,” stated Karen Wetzel Schott, Operations Manager for the Ventura County Farmers’ Market Association. “We have plenty of lunch bag favorites available with ample amounts of fruits & vegetables available through September and a new crop of apples starting in mid August to early September,” continued Schott. “If we can get kids excited about including fruits and vegetables in their daily lunch sack, we’ve done our job,” she added.
According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, the modern American diet is public health threat number one. Research has shown that when a child’s nutritional needs are met, the child is more attentive in class and has better attendance and fewer disciplinary problems.
With four markets in operation within Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, the Ventura County Farmers’ Market Association provides the freshest of produce, flowers, eggs, nuts, honey and potted plants direct to the consumer from California farmers. The community of Ventura is served with two Farmers’ Markets – Wednesdays at the Pacific View Mall, front west parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Saturdays in downtown Ventura on the corners of Santa Clara and Palm Streets from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon. The Thousand Oaks Market is held on Thursdays at their temporary location, 403 West Hillcrest Drive, rooftop of the Recreation & Park District from 2 to 6:30 p.m. Santa Clarita Farmers’ Market is held Sundays at the College of the Canyons, Parking Lot 8 on Valencia Boulevard from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon.
For more information on the Ventura County Certified Farmers’ Markets, call 805-529-6266 or visit the website at www.vccfarmersmarket.com.
